Both fields have intriguing conceptual October, the German Supercomputing Center HLRZ (Höchstleitungsrechenzentrum) at the research center Jülich (KFA) organized an international workshop 'Traffic and Granular Flow'. The purpose of this workshop was to promote the interaction between these two scientific fields, to which supercomputing is making Format: Hardcover.

The answers given at the international workshop "Traffic and Granular Flow '99" are presented in this volume. From a physical standpoint, all these systems can be treated as (self)-driven many-particle systems with strong fluctuations, showing multistability, phase transitions, non-linear waves, etc.

The contributions are based on the International Workshop Traffic and Granular Flow '01, which took place in Nagoya, 15 - 17 October Topics include a critical classification of models for highway traffic, new technological applications, friction and arching phenomena in pedestrian traffic, scale free networks and internet traffic, instabilities and fluctuations in avalanches and granular pipe flow.

The edition of this worldwide biannual conference is organised by the Delft University of Technology, where it returns after 12 years.

What started as a one-time event in has grown in 20 years to a conference series with a very good scientific reputation. The Conference on Traffic and Granular Flow (TGF) brings together researchers from several fields (ranging from physics to computer science and engineering) to discuss about the latest developments in the science of a variety of flowing collective systems.

Originally conceived after the similar phenomenology found in a traffic and granular flow, the latest TGF conferences have swayed. granular material flow phenomena, for example the formation and dissipa-tion of force chains (Cundall and Strack ) and the complex response of a bed of grains to imposed vertical vibration (Wassgrenet al.

To develop a unified view of flow instabilities like traffic jams or clogging of a hopper by powder was a purpose of the international workshop. Traffic as well as Granular Flow have both intriguing conceptual analogies. Traffic jams can be. This book again continues the biannual series of (now six) conference proceedings, which has become a classical reference in traffic and granular research alike.

This book continues the biannual series of conference proceedings, which has become a classical reference resource in traffic and granular research alike, and addresses the latest developments at the intersection of physics, engineering and computational science.

These involve complex systems, in which multiple simple agents, be they vehicles or particles, give rise to surprising and. The flow of granular materials such as sand, snow, coal, and catalyst particles is common occurrence in natural and industrial settings. The mechanics of these materials is not well understood.

This was probably first recorded be Lucretius (ca. 98–55 B.C.), who wrote “One can scoop up poppy seeds with a ladle as easily as if they were water and, when dipping the ladle, the seeds flow in a continuous stream,” (quotation taken from Jacques). As long as there has been mining and agriculture, man Cited by: Both the realistic modelling of granular media and traffic flow present important challenges at the borderline between physics and engineering, and enormous progress has been made sincewhen this series started.

Still the research on these topics is thriving, so that this book ."Traffic and Granular Flow '01" XIX, p. illus. Hardcover ISBNEUR ; Next conference TGF '03 will be held at Delft.
